ARCHI-FASHION/ Spatial Versatility
about Fashion- their freedom for self-expression with mutual influences
Spatial architecture and fashion culture, both characterized by their diversity in form of aesthetic representations and historical grandeur, are not only mutually influential but also inseparable from the public living domain. As a versatile ideology, fashion culture alternates its appearance as it emerges in various fields. The crossing between architecture and fashion has become more and more visible in the recent years, such as the Chanel Mobile Art designed by Zaha Hadid. As a straight-forward visual statement for Chanel, the white exterior shell is composed of hundreds of white fiber re-enforced plastic boards that can be completely decomposed into a pack to travel around the world. Rem Koolhaus also collaborates with Prada Foundation to design the "Transformer" in Seoul, Korea. The design challenges the convention of architecture as the spatial function alters through transformation of the form. Lastly, in the design of LV Museum by Frank Gehry, the architect adopts a glass vessel as the main concept to articulate his interpretation of art, fashion and architecture.
Acknowledging space and fashion as the core of thinking, this exhibition invites the creators from architecture and fashion industries to study spatial issues through conversion of designer roles and design languages. Analyzing design products from the perspectives of space, textile and metalwork with the most fundamental design elements allows the audience to experience the intertwinement of space and fashion.
The highlight of the show, Fashion Cube Project, is the cross product of architecture and fashion designers. Each party selects three to five representational pieces from their past works. Through face-to-face communication, they re-interpret and re-create their own pieces with new languages that contain vocabulary of the other. This process is mainly about an exchange of design concept and means of operation. Through the development of new arguments for form and characteristic, they start to reveal the intersection of space and fashion in this experiment for RE-representation.
